Friday Night Lights (sigh)

19 Feb

So, Friday Night Lights is over. Forever. And it was a great finale and my heart is sad that there will never be another new episode but I wasn’t going to mention it because the whole season is airing over again on NBC starting in April, so I’m choosing to think of it as not REALLY being over. But my TV won’t let me forget that it really, really is. Parenthood is by far the worst offender. It’s like the Unemployed Friday Night Lights Actor Refuge. First, Minka Kelly (Lyla) turned up as Max’s therapist. Then came Michael B Jordan (Vince) as Alex. Then Angela Rawna (Vince’s mom) came along as a marriage counselor (sadly, she and Vince shared no scenes together). And in this last episode, not only did Minka come back, but Jeff Rosick (Buddy, Jr.) popped up as a bully. And those are just the people I can remember off the top of my head; there could be more. It isn’t quite as random as it sounds—I got suspicious after Vince’s mom turned up and looked up the shows (journalism!). Turns out they share Jason Katims, a writer/exec producer. I guess he is a very loyal guy. Now I’m just waiting for the day when every single actor from FNL appears on that show. They’ve already got a big cast, what’s a couple dozen-ish more people?

Other actors have turned up in other parts of TV land, rubbing it in that the show is over. Scott Porter (Jason) is on The Good Wife. I just saw a promo for The Chicago Code featuring Matt Lauria (Luke). Zach Gilford (Matt) is, sadly, on Off the Map (seriously, can someone please start a fund to rescue him and Caroline Dhavernas from that show? They deserve so much better!).

Now, I am very happy for the ones that have jobs, and I hope all the rest of them get employed quickly too (seriously, if there is any justice in this world, Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, and Taylor Kitsch will be fighting off offers). But couldn’t they just lay low for awhile? Stick to movies and give me some time to grieve before they make their triumphant return to TV? Or better yet, can’t they just all find parts that are exactly like their Friday Night Lights characters, preferably all in one show? Make it happen, TV Gods!
